GlaxoSmithKline will pay a billion dollars in lawsuits related to the effects of antidepressants

British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline announced the settlement of claims, claims against the new antidepressant «Paxil». According to media reports, the corporation agreed to pay a billion dollars of compensation for 800 claims.
The claims relate to adverse effects in newborns whose mothers took an antidepressant.
Previously, against GlaxoSmithKline filed numerous lawsuits concerning not only the actions of the fetus in pregnant women, but also for side effects in children and adolescents, which doctors give «Paxil». The petitioners accused the manufacturer of concealing the results of clinical studies.
The company itself is information about the essence of pre-trial settlement were not disclosed. The manufacturer notes that the agreement achieved only part of the claims. Three collective applications will be considered in the courts of the State of Philadelphia in September of this year.
Antidepressants «Paxil» since the advent of the market in 1992 was considered a drug, not causing malformations in the fetus when taking during pregnancy. Last week, GlaxoSmithKline announced that it reserved the 1.57 billion pounds (2.37 billion dollars) of profits for the quarter II compensation claims against «Paxil», a drug for diabetics «Avandia» and violations at the plant in Puerto Rico.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, GlaxoSmithKline issued a statement for the II quarter of this year. The company's revenues amounted to 7.03 billion pounds (+4% compared to the same period last year), profit before tax - 494 million pounds. Earnings per share decreased by 92% - up to 2.6  pounds.
